Beyond Step Counting: 5 Fitness Metrics That Actually Matter

The 10,000-step goal was marketing. These metrics are science.

You hit 10,000 steps today. Your phone buzzed. Confetti rained down on your screen. Congratulations—you walked roughly five miles, burned maybe 400 extra calories, and earned bragging rights at dinner. Now here's the uncomfortable question: what do you actually know about your health that you didn't know this morning?

The answer, for most people, is almost nothing. Steps tell you that you moved. They don't tell you whether your body recovered from yesterday's workout, whether your cardiovascular fitness is improving or declining, or whether your sleep last night actually restored you. If you're serious about understanding your body, there are fitness metrics more important than steps—and most mainstream fitness apps barely touch them.

The 10,000-step target didn't emerge from a clinical trial. It came from a 1965 Japanese marketing campaign for a pedometer called the Manpo-kei—literally "10,000-step meter." A 2019 study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that women who averaged 4,400 steps per day had significantly lower mortality rates than those averaging 2,700. Benefits continued up to about 7,500 steps before plateauing. Not 10,000. Not even close.1

What it is

Heart rate variability (HRV) measures the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. A healthy nervous system produces more variation. A stressed, under-recovered, or overtrained system produces less.

What it is

Resting heart rate (RHR) is your heart rate at complete rest—ideally measured first thing in the morning. Average adult RHR sits between 60–100 bpm. Well-trained individuals often land between 40–60 bpm.
